불안한 꿈 속에서 나는 조약돌로 된 좁은 길을 혼자서 걸었어요
가로등 불빛 아래서 나는 추위와 습기 때문에 옷깃을 세워 올렸어요

That split the night and touched the sound of silence

​내 눈이 네온등의 불빛 때문에 찔리는 듯 했을 때에
그 불빛은 밤을 가르고 ​침묵의 소리에 닿았어요

People talking without speaking, People hearing without listening

​전등갓도 없는 불빛 속에서 나는 만 명 어쩌면 더 많은 사람들을 보았어요
사람들은 말 없이 이야기하고, 사람들은 귀도 기울이지 않고 들어요

​"바보들"이라 말했어요. "당신은 침묵이 마치 암이 자라는 것과 같다는 걸 몰라요"
내 이야기를 들어봐요, 내가 가르쳐 줄게요.  내 손을 잡아요, 내가 다가갈 게요
하지만 내 이야기 소리 없는 빗방울 같이 떨어져 침묵의 우물에서 메아리 쳤어요

 

And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out, its warning in the words that it was forming

​사람들은 자기가 만들었던 네온 신에게 기도하고 또 절을 했어요
그 사인은 밝게 빛났고, 네온이 만들고 있는 말들은 경고의 말이었어요

And whispered in the sound of silence"

그 경고는 말하기를, "예언자의 말씀은 지하철 벽에 씌여져 있고
연립주택의 벽에 씌여져 있다"고 했어요.
그리고 침묵의 소리에 속삭였어요.
